The newest facial on the block- clinical grade CBD using pharmaceutical grade CBD isolate.
CBD isolate used in cosmetics come in two forms: crystalline solids or powder CBD isolate. Both of these contain ~99% pure CBD. The CBD extraction process is based on removing all of the active components from the cannabis plant and then refining these compounds to remove all of the unwanted compounds and plant matter from the CBD isolate.
These compounds include phytocannabinoids (THC being one of them). The end result of this procedure is an isolate containing ~99% pure CBD.
CBD Isolate is the most versatile and pure form of CBD, allowing it to be added to industrial processes, ingredient formulations, pharmaceutical drug development, cosmetic applications, and more.
Pharmaceutical grade CBD is known as CBD isolate API which is what is used in the Mia’s Corner CBD facial kit.
The short answer is that CBD is a molecule found in hemp. It’s like a best friend—it supports you, brings you back to balance when you’re getting a little flustered, and makes you better. The longer answer is that CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, is an active molecule found in cannabis. CBD is just one of many cannabinoids found in the plant (there are over 100!).
What does CBD do?
CBD increases hydration and moisture, and helps diminish the appearance of longer-term concerns like lines and wrinkles. CBD is rich in antioxidants and naturally high (we had to) in vitamins A, D, and E. It's also filled with essential fatty acids like omega 3 and G, which are important for the overall health and appearance of skin. CBD is a great addition to skincare routines focused on improving skin texture and diminishing puffiness. It even acts as an optimiser that amplifies the active ingredients of the other products you use, helping them penetrate deeper into the skin. We call it an optimiser for a reason.
How does CBD work its magic in our bodies?
CBD works with an understudied system in the body called the endocannabinoid. This system is made up of receptors located in areas like our brain, stomach, and central nervous system, which are responsible for maintaining our body’s proper function. Like a lock and key, CBD finds areas of the body where we are out of sync and brings the body back to homeostasis or balance.
What if you're pregnant?
When CBD is administered in a topical setting, there isn't enough THC entering the system to be a concern to those who are pregnant. However, if you have any questions, please consult a medical professional.
Can you be allergic to CBD?
As far as we know, no. CBD, in skincare or otherwise, is always accompanied by a carrier (oil, cream, or liquid), which may contain ingredients that you're allergic to. Specific to the products we're using in the CBD Facial, if you have an allergy to honey, avocado, almond, or coconut, we recommend skipping this experience or letting us substitute as needed. As with all allergy concerns, we do our very best to understand common allergies in our ingredients, but always consult a medical professional if you have any concerns.
Is CBD intended for everyday use?
CBD can be used every day, but as with everything, moderation is always good practice.
Can you use too much CBD?
Everyone responds to CBD differently. That said, it isn’t known to build up in your system so there isn't a risk of “too much.”
According to Danielle Frey, owner and licensed aesthetician at Bloom Skincare Mendocino, the two leading causes of skin aging and common skin issues like acne and hyperpigmentationare:
• free radical damageTrusted Source to the epidermis
• inflammation caused by irregular functions in the endocannabinoid system
“The endocannabinoid system is a complex matrix of cell receptors responsible for balancing many key functions of the skinTrusted Source, such as oil production, melanocyte production (also known as pigmentation), and much more,” says Frey.
She adds, “CBD is an incredibly effective ingredient in skin care due to it being a powerful antioxidant and providing anti-inflammatory benefits.”
While research into CBD is ongoing, what we do know so far seems to back this up. Here’s how the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD affect the body’s largest organ:
• Regulates oil production. The overproduction of sebum is thought to be a contributing factor of acne. According to a 2014 studyTrusted Source, CBD may have an anti-inflammatory effect on sebocytes, the skin cells that produce sebum.
• Helps reduce inflammation. As an anti-inflammatory, CBD may be able to help reduce swelling, pain, and redness from existing breakouts, or irritation from skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
• Hydrates dry skin. Research from 2009Trusted Sourcesuggests that CBD may be effective for dry, dehydrated skin.
While we’re still scratching the surface of CBD, “It really is incredibly fascinating and promising in terms of the many benefits phytocannabinoids provide for the skin,” says Frey. “I think we will only see more and more use of these type of phytocannabinoids in skin care and wellness formulations in the years to come.”
• Check testing results. “Most leading CBD skin care companies will provide lab results for their CBD extract to ensure you know exactly what you are putting on your skin,” says Frey. “You want to be sure that the hemp plants used to extract the CBD were farmed without pesticides and other harmful properties. [These] would defeat the purpose of using the healing compounds.”
